How to use this free page

1. Print the reference and place blank paper beside it.
2. Begin with Step 1 and add the new details shown in each following stage.
3. After Step 6, choose whether to keep the pencil drawing or add festive colors.

What the activity asks the artist to do

The first stages establish Santa’s hat and face before the beard and expression complete the cartoon. Work through the numbered pictures in order and compare your drawing with the next stage rather than trying to copy the finished face immediately. This is a reference lesson; use separate paper for your own drawing.

An optional idea for the next picture

For a Christmas drawing activity, turn the finished head into the beginning of a larger Santa picture on your own paper. You might add shoulders, an imagined gift tag, or a simple background. The provided sample teaches the head shown; the extra scene is your own extension.
